At Stellenbosch Hospice, we understand that home is often where people feel most safe, comfortable, and at peace. That’s why the majority of our patients with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses are cared for in the comfort of their own homes by our dedicated Palliative Home Nursing team.
Our professional nursing staff provides expert, compassionate care – managing pain, controlling symptoms, and ensuring that our patients’ dignity and quality of life are always respected. They are supported by a wider interdisciplinary team that includes social workers and volunteers, and together they walk closely with both patient and family during this important time.

Regular visits enable us to respond to changing needs and provide both practical and emotional support. In addition, a Palliative Care nurse is always available by phone, ensuring guidance is just a call away. All of this is done under the medical direction of our Palliative Care doctors, who ensure every patient receives appropriate, individualised care.
Caring Tips for Families at Home
- Create a calm space: Soft lighting, quiet surroundings, and familiar items can help ease anxiety and bring comfort.
- Stay on top of medication: Use a daily chart or organiser. Don’t hesitate to call your hospice nurse with questions.
- Prioritise comfort: Little things matter – a warm blanket, a favourite song, or simply being present can make a big difference.
- Encourage open conversation: Let your loved one talk, reflect, or just sit in silence. Every moment shared is meaningful.
- Look after yourself too: Rest, ask for help, and take breaks. Your well-being is essential to theirs.
